Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You” was the tune for Sunday Night Football’s “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” for a long time, but this year, Carrie Underwood will get her own song when the show premieres on September 11.

Carrie Underwood won’t be ”waiting all day for Sunday night” this fall when NBC premieres a new theme song for its prime-time ”Sunday Night Football” program.
The Grammy-winning country star will be singing a new theme song, ”Oh, Sunday Night,” during the first game telecast on Sept. 11 between the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals. The song is based on her 2014 hit country duet ”Somethin’ Bad” with Miranda Lambert, but with new lyrics and additional changes to fit the program.
Joan Jett’s ”I Hate Myself for Loving You” had been basis for the program’s theme song since 2006, with various singers such as Pink and Faith Hill.

Joan Jett will no longer get those sweet royalty checks from NBC, and the NFL won’t rock as much on NBC without her. No matter which team wins on “Sunday Night Football” going forward, we all lose.
The network on Monday announced it is replacing its now-iconic “SNF” theme song — the Jett-inspired “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” — with the Carrie Underwood-inspired “Oh, Sunday Night.”
Beyond the name sounding like a bad mashup of a Christmas carol and a Four Seasons disco hit, it means we won’t be reminded of Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You” every time we watch football on Sunday night. That’s a shame.
…For the past decade, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” has been what we expected hear before the NFL’s most monumental matchups. Jett and John Williams’ instrumental theme have been as big a part of the show as Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth have.
We love rock ‘n’ roll, and we love what Jett’s music brought to those games. Unfortunately, NBC chose not put another dime in that jukebox.
I will miss Joan’s song – but 10 years is a good run. Here’s to bigger and better things for Joan!
