Telegraph.co.uk has a great article about Joan Jett, The Runaways, the movie, and the “Joan Jett” book by Todd Oldham. The author is a woman who listened to The Runaways in the 70’s. I want to meet her!
Here’s an excerpt:
Long before the Spice Girls shouted about Girl Power, or the music press ordained Riot Grrrl as the Next Big Thing, or Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin sang Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves, the Runaways looked to be the embodiment of liberation.
Except, of course, it wasn’t quite as straightforward as that; for like all the most memorable nursery rhymes and fairy tales, there is a dark twist. Little wonder the story has been retold for the Twilight generation in a Hollywood film starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie; beginning with a drop of blood on the ground (albeit menstrual, rather than vampiric). Why now, you might ask?
Well, why not? It’s an archetypal story – innocents tainted by experience on a roller-coaster ride of sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – released in a year when many of the Runaways’ original audiences have become parents to teenagers of their own.

I didn’t think I could love Kristen Stewart more.
Kristen told George Lopez on Lopez Tonight earlier this week that she was offered a lot of money to not cut her hair for The Runaways. But she turned it down to give Joan Jett, and her fans, an authentic, sweaty, rock-and-roll performance. That is so “Joan Jett.” 😀
Here’s the video. Wig talk starts at 5:24. The Runaways movie gets a big cheer from the crowd too. 🙂
Thank you, Kristen! And BIG THANKS to Summit Entertainment for not going all “Tony Soprano” on Kristen for her choice. You all did a good thing.
Fans of Joan Jett and The Runaways have endured decades of incredulous stares from people who only think of Joan Jett in terms of “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” and have no idea that she has been making music and touring steadily since her first band in 1975. Fans of Kristen Stewart are desperate to prove that Kristen is more than just Bella Swan.
The Runaways movie was a sanctuary for all of us, even with all of its imperfections. But our joy at its creation has been tarnished by watching this rare gem of a film get treated like trash by the people responsible for its success. Continue reading
Every time I think about this and try to write it down, I get sick to my stomach. Because I know that people who haven’t seen The Runaways are going to assume that the movie flopped because either:
- The movie sucked,
- The fans didn’t like it, or, even worse,
- The fans don’t exist and nobody cared enough to see it.
As Joan Jett is my witness, none of those is true. Continue reading
Sony will release The Runaways on DVD and Blu-ray!
The date is tentatively set for July 20th. I’ll keep you posted if the date changes.
Thanks to kristenstewartdaily.net and various Twitter peeps.
I was unemployed when I started this blog, and as of March 10th, I have been earning a real paycheck. My husband is happy, but I have had problems finding balance these last few weeks. I abandoned you during what was quite possibly the busiest Joan Jett and Runaways news month. I have over 44 days of unread Google alerts in my inbox.
But I think I’m finally settling into a rhythm, and I should be able to post here more often.
I’m going to start the spring cleaning fest by pulling together all of the non-Joan Jett press interviews surrounding The Runaways that I’ve missed over the last six weeks or so. There are too many for one post, so I’ll group the videos from the various premieres into their own posts. I’m going to work through one batch a day until I’m all caught up.
Most of these are Kristen and Dakota, but I’ve got some Michael and Floria in here too. I can’t get enough of listening to these people talk about our girls. They all make me so proud!

OK, now I start the process of catching up on 20 days of missed blogging opportunities. This is going to take a while, so bear with me!
Here are all of The Runaways-related TV appearances made by Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart, and Dakota Fanning in the month of March. I’m doing it in chronological order, because I’m all librarian-like. I know I posted some of them before, but I want to have them all in one place, because I’m also all lazy-like. Enjoy!
Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

I won’t get to see The Runaways until April 9th, when the film opens wide in the US, because I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia gets all the cool cultural events before us. But Pittsburgh still rules because we have Penguins hockey. I guess I shouldn’t be greedy. 😛
There’s still plenty of stuff to keep me busy this month, though. Here are all the cool happenings surrounding Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and The Runaways movie that I know about. I’m sure there are other advance screenings of The Runaways in other cities other than what I’ve listed here. If you hear of any, let me know in the comments and give a link. Thanks!
Most of these events have been mentioned elsewhere on this blog, but I just learned of the advance screenings of The Runaways in Dallas (March 18th) and Los Angeles (March 9th) today.
UPDATE1: The Toronto premiere on March 14th and the digitial download of the movie soundtrack on March 16th have been added.
UPDATE2: Kristen Stewart will be on Live with Regis and Kelly and Jimmy Fallon on March 16th. Dakota Fanning will be on Jimmy Fallon on March 17th. Source and Source.
UPDATE3: Kristen Stewart will not attend the Toronto premiere, but will be at the Los Angeles, New York, and Austin premieres. Source.

||Joan Jett and the Blackhearts show in Shelton, Washington, at Little Creek Casino. Website
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are performing tomorrow, March 6, at Carlin Park in Jupiter, Florida for the celebrity dog wash to benefit the Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary and Hospital, which is a no-kill shelter.
Joan spoke with pbpulse.com and citylinkmix.com to talk about the show, her love of animals, The Runaways movie, and working with Kristen Stewart. They both contain some memorable quotes: Continue reading
If you haven’t visited the official website for The Runaways movie recently, GO NOW. I’ll wait. 🙂
The site has been redesigned, and it is full of WIN. They’ve added:
- Links for the new Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube pages
- A link to soundtrack info (which I won’t click on until after I see the movie).
- Downloadable wallpapers and chat icons.
- New production stills.
- Video clips of the real Runaways
- Bio pages for each cast member, including one for Joan as executive producer. (The only bad part of the site is that they spelled Scout Taylor-Compton’s name wrong. I hope they fix that soon!)
But the best part is that Dakota Fanning’s version of “Cherry Bomb” plays on a continuous loop on the site. (You can mute the audio on the page if you don’t want to listen to it for two hours straight like I have. :))
Back in December, Cherie Currie herself confirmed, on this blog, that Dakota Fanning sang “Cherry Bomb” in the movie, without any enhancements from Cherie’s voice. After hearing the whole track, there should now be no doubt. While Dakota’s voice captures Cherie Currie’s attitude and power perfectly, it definitely has its own tone that is distinguishable from Cherie. I LOVE IT.
I think I’ve said this before, but as a long-time Runaways fan, I feel so…honored by all of this.
Pilgrim Joanie. *snicker*.
In another recent interview for The Yellow Handkerchief, Kristen Stewart was asked about Joan Jett and her work on The Runaways, and she had some pretty cool stuff to say about our Joanie:
“I don’t think that the Runaways are something that a whole lot of people know about, but I think that everybody knows who Joan Jett is,” Stewart reckons. “But it was really, really hard to become that icon. I don’t know, she’s like a pilgrim. She was the first woman to ever start a record label, but even before that, because it was the ’70s, nobody wanted to see a girl be that strong and play electric guitar and play it that loud.
“People should know where that came from. I’ve grown up feeling very entitled, like I can do whatever I want. But she didn’t have that.”
Jett was a producer of “The Runaways” film and was on set every day.
“It was initially intimidating, just meeting her,” Stewart admits.
“Then I subsequently realized that I would feel like such a fraud if she wasn’t there. How would I have known any details without her? I just would have felt like I was doing an impression with black hair.
“I didn’t want to just mimic her, I wanted to understand what she was going through.”
And that was quite a lot, according to the movie: sexual and pharmaceutical experimentation; fights within the band, with its handlers and rowdy audiences; finding, maintaining and making a going concern of her own artistic voice.

I can no longer remember which Twitter friend clued me in to this, so thank you all!

I love Kristen, and I’m looking forward to seeing all of her new movies. 2010 is going to be an exciting year. 🙂

Thanks to @kstewadmirers for Tweeting this:
Fandango has published an edited version of an interview that Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart did at Sundance about The Runaways. Here’s a short snippet:
Q: We talked to Cherie, who said she feels like she’s living in a dream because you’re playing her, and Joan said you guys had very similar energy. How much time did you guys spend with them before and during the production?
Dakota: A lot. They were there pretty much every day and I spent a lot of time with Cherie before we started filming. I think it was important that they were there… because it’s their life, you know?
Kristen: There wasn’t a period of ‘let’s feel this out and see how much we’re willing to delve into personal aspects of your lives and how much we’re willing to expose ourselves’…but we really liked each other…there was just something really special.
Q: Was part of your attraction to the role the fact that this is about something that’s still very taboo…women doing certain things?
Kristen: Yeah, that was a huge thing and especially for Joan, it’s still such a huge [thing].…we’re girls that have both been brought up thinking we can do whatever we want and there are a lot of very empowered females [now], but it just wasn’t like that then. And I think that people don’t really realize that The Runaways were the first girls to play music like that and it could have been someone else, but it wasn’t. It was them.

And here is the full audio from that interview. It contains some foul language. (Go Stew!) This is the “p*ssy” to the wood” interview. 🙂
Here are all of the new video clips about The Runaways since the last time I posted some. There have also been a lot of online interviews, but I will only post the ones that are not re-hashes of interviews that I’ve already posted the video or audio of.
Just to inform you: I am completely serious about not wanting to be spoiled for The Runaways movie, so I’m not going to read or post any of the reviews. It makes no difference to me if this film is a critical success or not. The band itself never was, so I don’t care what critics think about them now.
On with the show! Continue reading

I have decided to not read any reviews of the film until after I see the movie. I don’t need the spoilers or the opinions of so-called “journalists”. All I need is my rock and roll. If you want to read the articles and reviews, check them out at the Joan Jett Fanclub website (joanjettbadrep.com), Kristen Stewart Fans, or any of the wonderful people I mentioned in my “Jetthead’s Guide to the 2010 Sundance Film Festival” post. Here are some videos of interviews that Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning did at Sundance. Enjoy!
And, our good friend @larry411 posted pics of Joan at the Harry O’s show from Saturday HERE. I’ll go through all of the press from that show this week and update the concert archive.
I started Born to be Jetthead on September 22, 2009 (Joan Jett’s birthday), but I’ve wanted to have a site like this for a long time. I used to write about Joan in my MySpace blog, but only a few people ever saw it.
All the way back in May, before The Runaways was filmed, I wrote an open letter to Kristen Stewart expressing my confidence in her ability to portray Joan. After seeing The Runaways trailer this week, I know that I am right. I am re-printing my letter to KStew here. Let me know what you think. (I can be a pretty emo broad, I know. :D)
Read my emo-tastic letter to Kristen after the jump.
