VOTE Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Jettheads, we have work to do.

I know that of all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees, only the 5 that receive the most votes will get inducted. And I know that popular vote–by the fans–has no bearing on the outcome. But there are online fan polls, and I want us to make a good showing. We must stand up for Joan, and everyone that’s ever worn the Blackheart hat.

Please vote in the rockhall.com’s fan poll, and vote often–multiple votes count. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are currently in 6th place. We have to get them higher!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Future Rock Legends is giving The Blackhearts’ only a 17% chance of getting inducted, which is partially based on their own poll results. Vote here and let’s get that number higher!

We only have until November to show the world what Joan Jett and the Blackhearts mean to us. Let’s make them proud! Spread the word!

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts nominated for the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

JETTHEADS: The day we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts have been nominated for induction into the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

NBC Nightly News gave Joan top billing on tonight’s broadcast:

msnbc video: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee…, posted with vodpod

From the Rock Hall’s official press release:

Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual Induction Ceremony. To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The 2012 Nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1986.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, the nonprofit organization that exists to educate its audiences on the global impact of the rock and roll art form via the museum, as well as its education programs and library and archives.

The 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in Cleveland on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Leading up to the ceremony, the Museum will host 10 days of special events, including tours of the newly redesigned Museum, the unveiling of a major new exhibit, and the grand opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new Library and Archives. The Library and Archives will be the world’s most comprehensive repository of written and audio-visual materials relating to the history of rock and roll.

Tables and VIP Packages for the 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony are available now. The ceremony will again be open to the public, as it was – for the first time in the event’s history – at the 2009 Inductions in Cleveland. Individual tickets for the Induction Ceremony will go on sale to the public in December 2011. Visit rockhall.com for details.

Read the rest HERE, including the artist bios. LOVE this quote from Joan in her bio:

“It’s a feeling thing, it’s emotion. You don’t think about it. If you start thinking rock ‘n’ roll, you’re f**ked. That’s when you’re homogenized. That’s when it’s boring. And that’s when it’s bullshit.”–Joan Jett

Congratulations to Joan Jett AND the Blackhearts, and to all nominees!

Joan Jett Australian TV Alert: ABC’s Rage, Feb 12, 2011

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts filmed an episode of Rage, for ABC Australia, which will air on Saturday, February 12, 2011 (Australia time). See the schedule here (JJBH are listed in the “Coming Up” section on the right): http://www.abc.net.au/rage/

Thanks to Dave in Australia, who emailed me the tip! For those of us not in Australia, Dave says that Rage is a music video show where guests sit on a couch, talk about and play their favorite music clips, and then play some of their own. From reading the show’s about page, I gather that it’s like MTV and the musical guests are the VJ’s. The show runs all night Friday and Saturday nights, but the only time they have hosts is on Saturday nights when the celebrities come in. Each celebrity host chooses around 40 videos to air, followed by their own videos, so it looks like Australian TV viewers will get several hours of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. 🙂  Check your local listings for the times.

Rage’s website publishes its playlists, so we will get to see a list of what Joan picks. I hope us non-Australians can see her intro bits on the internet someday too.

*NEW* Joan Jett tour date in Sydney, Australia

A little Jetthead birdie in my email told me today that The Blackhearts are performing at Annandale Hotel in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, January 7th, 2011. This date is in addition to the three Australian festivals The Blackhearts are already scheduled to perform at earlier that month. (I talked about those here and here.) The Annandale Hotel will be a more intimate pub show, which will be great for fans near Sydney who can’t get close enough to the festivals! (I can’t get a feel for exactly how big or small the venue is just from the website. Can any Australian Jettheads help me out with a description?)

Tickets for the Annandale show go on sale November 16th. http://www.news.com.au made the announcement, along with a short interview with Joan: Continue reading

Happy Birthday Enzo! (August 22)

Enzo, bassist for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, celebrates his birthday today!

Enzo has been in The Blackhearts since the late 90’s, and I love him. He’s a quiet guy, and his biography is suspiciously missing from all of Joan’s websites. I’ve only met him once, but I think he’s sweet. (He was kind enough to give me a hug the night Sandy West died.)

Before The Blackhearts, he was in a band called Speed McQueen and released a CD in 1997. You can occasionally find copies on eBay. There are a couple of Buy It Now auctions HERE and HERE now.

Enzo is also in The Public Offenders with Blackheart lead guitarist Dougie Needles (listen to their music here), and, most recently, he joined Blackheart drummer Thommy Price and members of The New York Dolls and The Dead Boys to form Batusis. Check out their MySpace page, their Facebook page, and their debut 4-track EP on Smog Veil Records.

I don’t know much else about Enzo, other than I love his contribution to The Blackhearts. That’s the important stuff, though, isn’t it?

Enzo, happy birthday dude. And thanks again for that hug. 🙂

Joan Jett will spend New Year’s in AUSTRALIA!

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts are returning to Australia for the first time since 1995*, when they play three festivals in December and January.

I have no idea who took this beautiful picture. Whoever you are, thank you!

Tickets go on sale soon! None of the festivals’ schedules have been finalized yet, so check the following sites for more info and tickets:

1. The Falls Festival, December 28, 2010 – January 1, 2011:

This festival is in two cities, Marion Bay, Tasmania, and Lorne, Victoria. The Blackhearts are on the list to play in both cities, but I don’t know which dates are in which city. Visit the official festival website for more details and tickets. Also follow the official festival Twitter.

Ricky Byrd’s official Facebook page

Former Blackheart Ricky Byrd has a Facebook page. Add him as a friend!

http://www.facebook.com/#!/ricky.byrd1

Ricky is a great guitar player and was with The Blackhearts for a long time. I’m sorry that I never got to see him play live. I’ll update this post later tonight with more information about Ricky and his genius. 🙂

I’ll add his Facebook to the official links section later. Since we have a lot of links, I’m going to put them all on their own page soon to free up some space in the sidebar. I’ve got other goodies I want to add there. 🙂

In the meantime, here’s some classic Ricky Byrd. Enjoy!

European and Canadian Joan Jett tour dates added

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are opening for Green Day in Europe this summer. The European dates have led to two cancellations stateside:

1. June 4, 2010, at Portfest in Newport, Arkansas. The Blackhearts have been replaced with Blues Traveler.

2. June 11, 2010, at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota. The Blackhearts have been replaced with John Kay & Steppenwolf, however, Cherie Currie will still be at that show if you want to attend. Read more HERE.

A date in Ottawa, Canada has been added on July 9. So far, only one Canadian date is being reported, but if they add others I’ll let you know!

2. The venue for the August 29 date in Atlanta, Georgia, has been announced as the Chastain Park Amphitheater. Billy Idol is also playing at this show, so it looks like The Blackhearts are opening for him on his tour, but I’m not 100% sure.

Dougie Needles’ Blackheart Birthday! (March 11)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOUGIE!!!

Dougie Needles is a badass

As I type this, folks in Los Angeles are gearing up for The Runaways‘ premiere, but I didn’t want today to pass without paying tribute to one of the greatest lead guitar players in the world on his birthday. (In my opinion, at least.)

Dougie Needles has been spicing up The Blackhearts’ stew since… jeez, I think it was 1999 or 2000. I’ll have to ask the board to see if anyone remembers the exact year, but I know it was a long time ago. (I’ll edit this when I confirm.)  His sound is distinctive, and all punk.

Here are a few of my favorite Dougie-fied Jett solos. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Continue reading

Video of Joan Jett on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Joan’s interview and “Cherry Bomb” performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night (3/9) were EPIC. The Jett Eye Lock was on full-force! (She should trademark that…)

Gah! I absolutely LOVE Dougie’s solo during this song. (Tomorrow, 3/11, is his birthday!)

If you’re wondering about that Outlaw Biker cover that Jay shows during the interview, it was published in August 1988. She appeared on the cover again in issue #173 in 2008.

March is a busy month for Joan Jett and “The Runaways”!

I won’t get to see The Runaways until April 9th, when the film opens wide in the US, because I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia gets all the cool cultural events before us. But Pittsburgh still rules because we have Penguins hockey. I guess I shouldn’t be greedy. 😛

There’s still plenty of stuff to keep me busy this month, though. Here are all the cool happenings surrounding Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and The Runaways movie that I know about. I’m sure there are other advance screenings of The Runaways in other cities other than what I’ve listed here. If you hear of any, let me know in the comments and give a link. Thanks!

Most of these events have been mentioned elsewhere on this blog, but I just learned of the advance screenings of The Runaways in Dallas (March 18th) and Los Angeles (March 9th) today.

UPDATE1: The Toronto premiere on March 14th and the digitial download of the movie soundtrack on March 16th have been added.

UPDATE2: Kristen Stewart will be on Live with Regis and Kelly and Jimmy Fallon on March 16th. Dakota Fanning will be on Jimmy Fallon on March 17th. Source and Source.

UPDATE3: Kristen Stewart will not attend the Toronto premiere, but will be at the Los Angeles, New York, and Austin premieres. Source.

Two new Joan Jett interviews

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are performing tomorrow, March 6, at Carlin Park in Jupiter, Florida for the celebrity dog wash to benefit the Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary and Hospital, which is a no-kill shelter.

Joan spoke with pbpulse.com and citylinkmix.com to talk about the show, her love of animals, The Runaways movie, and working with Kristen Stewart. They both contain some memorable quotes: Continue reading

Joan Jett will sit down with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show!

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts announced today via MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, that, when The Blackhearts perform on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, March 9, Joan will also get to talk with Jay:

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will be performing on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC on Tuesday, March 9th. Joan Jett will also sit down with Jay. Check your local listings for times.

This will be awesome. I hope Jay does at least one segment with her and its not just a quick hello after the performance. The last time Joan got to TALK on a late-night talk show was Craig Ferguson in 2006, when she was promoting her Sinner cd. Joan also did Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2006, but she only performed on those shows and was not interviewed.

Please do more of these, Joanie! We love to hear you talk. Hey, maybe you can go on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and toss a football with him like Kristen Stewart did last November. Or, you could always play “Wheel of Carpet Samples”. 🙂

Updated Joan Jett/Runaways schedule for March 2010

Multiple Sarcasms, the movie starring Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in drag as the “night club band”, may not be released in March as originally planned. The IMDB page still lists the release date as March 2010, but Moviefone now lists the release date as May 7, 2010. The official website still just says “Spring of 2010”. I’ll keep you posted if it changes again.

Here is the updated schedule for all of the Runaways/Joan Jett stuff coming in March:

March 1st:

  • Release of Rock ‘N’ Roll Comics Volume 1: Hard Rock Heroes, which contains a Joan Jett and Lita Ford comic. You can pre-order Volume 1 at Amazon HERE. The Runaways will make an appearance in Volume 9, SMASH! A Punk/Alternative Retrospective. Read more about each volume HERE. Since I originally posted about this, Jay Allen Sanford, one of the minds behind the original Rock ‘N’ Roll comics, told me that a full-length comic dedicated to Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and The Runaways was in the works by Bluewater Productions, but Bluewater has not made the official announcement and no release date has been set. Rock ‘N’ Roll comics were originally published in the 1990’s, so if you already have those comics, it doesn’t look like these will be anything new for you.

March 9th:

  • Release of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Greatest Hits, on Vinyl, CD, and now iTunes. You can preorder all three now. The iTunes version is a Deluxe Edition with a bonus track and music videos! (At first, I wasn’t going to buy this because I have all of these songs, but the music videos on iTunes are calling to me. I think I’m going to buy that one.)

March 16th:

  • Release of The Runaways: The Mercury Albums Anthology on Hip-O Select. You can preorder it from Hip-O Select, CD Universe, and Amazon.
  • Release of Cherie Currie’s book, Neon Angel: A Memoir of The Runaways, on It Books. Preorder it HERE.

March 19th:

  • Premiere of The Runaways movie in the US and Canada.

March 23rd:

  • Release of The Runaways Official Motion Picture Soundtrack. You can preorder it from Amazon HERE.

Runaways’ “Mercury Albums Anthology” Due on March 16th

Start saving your money. You will be broke in March. But you will be happy. 😀

According to MusicTap and Pause&Play, Hip-O Select is releasing an anthology of all of The Runaways’ Mercury Records albums on March 16th, called The Mercury Albums Anthology. (Thanks to blacknblue77 for the tip on the message board.)

The Hip-O Select website doesn’t mention it, so I have no idea yet what it may cost, or if it will include anything rare or previously unreleased. I’ll let you know when I hear something.

Click HERE to see a discography of Runaways music. The Mercury Records albums were The Runaways, Queens of Noise, Live in Japan, and Waitin’ for the Night. I have all of these on CD from Amazon.com, but it looks like most of them are out of stock there or nearly so.

For those keeping score at home, here’s everything we have on deck for March so far:

March 1st:

  • Release of Rock ‘N’ Roll Comics Volume 1: Hard Rock Heroes. The Rock ‘N’ Roll Comics series was published in the 1990’s and is now being republished by Bluewater Productions as a series of graphic novels. Volume 1 contains the Joan Jett/Lita Ford comic. These comics were unauthorized biographies, so take it with a grain of salt. But they are still cool to have. You can pre-order Volume 1 at Amazon HERE. The Runaways will make an appearance in Volume 9, SMASH! A Punk/Alternative Retrospective. Read more about each volume HERE. (FYI to Twilight fans: Bluewater Productions also publishes the Female Force comics; you may have seen the one they did on Stephenie Meyer.)

March 9th:

  • Release of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts Greatest Hits, probably on Blackheart Records.

March 16th:

  • Release of The Runaways: The Mercury Albums Anthology on Hip-O Select.
  • Release of Cherie Currie’s book, Neon Angel: A Memoir of The Runaways, on It Books.

March 19th:

  • Premiere of The Runaways movie in the US and Canada.

March 2010:

  • US release of Multiple Sarcasms, starring Joan Jett and the Blackhearts as the night club band. The exact date hasn’t been announced yet, but right now it is supposed to happen sometime in March.

Happy Birthday, Thommy Price! 12/09/09

Happy Birthday, Thommy!

Today, December 9, is Thommy Price’s birthday! I thought we could start the celebration by resurrecting an awesome interview he did with David Iozzia in 2007:

Dave: At your MySpace page, you state that although you had been playing on Joan Jett and The Blackhearts records, you weren’t in the band. After seeing them play at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, you joined a perfect rock and roll gang. Did you have to change “your game” to fit in or did you see anything watching from the audience that you wanted to tweak?

THOMMY: They were a great band, and I wanted to be a part of what was going on. I didn’t agree with what was going on drum-wise. That’s the reason I thought they needed me. I think that my drumming made them a better band.

Thommy, your drumming makes The Blackhearts a GREAT band, and I will always be grateful that you were born. I heard YOUR drums at the beginning of “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” which is the song that started all of my Jetthead insanity. (Now you all know who to blame!)

Read the rest of the interview HERE.

Read more about Thommy’s career and his solo work on his Myspace page, and his official website.

Follow the jump to see some of my favorite drum tracks from Mr. Thommy Price, in no particular order. Which ones are YOUR favorites?
