On Thursday, August 1, Joan Jett will be the first female artist to receive the “Elmer Valentine Award” at the Sunset Strip Music Festival. West Hollywood, California, has also declared August 1 as “Joan Jett Day” to celebrate!
From http://www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com/joan-jett-honoree/ :
As with previous SSMF honorees, Jett will be celebrated at an exclusive VIP event Thursday, August 1 at the House of Blues Sunset Strip, kicking off the three-day music festival. There she will be presented with the coveted “Elmer Valentine Award” and, immediately following the tribute ceremony, lucky attendees will enjoy a full live performance by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Tickets for the event are extremely limited and are on sale now at sunsetstrip.eventbrite.com. In addition to the VIP reception, the City of West Hollywood will honor Jett by officially proclaiming Thursday, August 1 “Joan Jett Day.”
“I actually lived on the Strip, right across the street from The Whisky,” said Joan Jett. “The Sunset Strip is a piece of rock ‘n roll history. I never thought all of those insane times would turn into an award, but I’m very honored, and inspired to keep making music.”
As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, Jett has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” Jett was recently able to see her story told in The Runaways, a film based on (lead singer of The Runaways) Cherie Currie’s book Neon Angel and starring Kristen Stewart as Jett, and Dakota Fanning as Currie. Jett was close to the project, serving as an Executive Producer.
“It is my honor and pleasure to take part in inducting the first female music superstar, Joan Jett, to the exclusive group of Sunset Strip icons to receive the coveted ‘Elmer Valentine Award,’” says SSMF Festival Managing Director Karmen Beck. “We are delighted to celebrate Joan Jett who has so much influenced the history of the legendary boulevard.”
This marks the sixth installment of the award ceremony and the Sunset Strip Music Festival, which celebrates the music and icons that have made an impact on the legacy of The Strip. The event debuted in 2008 with the recognition of Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine, founders of cornerstone Sunset Strip venues The Roxy Theatre, Rainbow Bar & Grill and Whisky A Go-Go. In 2009, Ozzy Osbourne received the “Elmer Valentine Award,” which was thusly named after the passing of original honoree Valentine. The 2010 award went to Slash, in 2011 Mötley Crüe was recognized, and in 2012 The Doors were celebrated.

Joan has also been immortalized on one of the art guitars in Gibson’s GuitarTown exhibit. The exhibit will be on display August 3rd during SSMF, and then the guitars will be moved to the boulevard for everyone to see.
Gibson Guitartown on the Sunset Strip unveiled its third installment of art guitars last Wednesday, at Hornburg Land Rover showroom on 9176 Sunset boulevard.
The public art exhibit featured 10-foot tall art guitar sculptures celebrating artists and musicians who have influenced The Sunset Strip. The current selection includes works celebrating 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF) honoree Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, Love, ZZ Top, Alice Cooper and Debbie Harry.
As in previous years, the 2013 Gibson GuitarTown art guitars will be auctioned for charity at the end of their “tour.” Proceeds from the auction will benefit Music For Relief, the nonprofit organization Linkin Park founded to support disaster relief, provide aid to survivors of natural disasters and support the prevention of such disasters via environmental programs.

From the Rock Hall’s official press release:
Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual Induction Ceremony. To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The 2012 Nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1986.
All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, the nonprofit organization that exists to educate its audiences on the global impact of the rock and roll art form via the museum, as well as its education programs and library and archives.
The 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in Cleveland on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Leading up to the ceremony, the Museum will host 10 days of special events, including tours of the newly redesigned Museum, the unveiling of a major new exhibit, and the grand opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new Library and Archives. The Library and Archives will be the world’s most comprehensive repository of written and audio-visual materials relating to the history of rock and roll.
Tables and VIP Packages for the 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony are available now. The ceremony will again be open to the public, as it was – for the first time in the event’s history – at the 2009 Inductions in Cleveland. Individual tickets for the Induction Ceremony will go on sale to the public in December 2011. Visit rockhall.com for details.
Read the rest HERE, including the artist bios. LOVE this quote from Joan in her bio:
“It’s a feeling thing, it’s emotion. You don’t think about it. If you start thinking rock ‘n’ roll, you’re f**ked. That’s when you’re homogenized. That’s when it’s boring. And that’s when it’s bullshit.”–Joan Jett
Congratulations to Joan Jett AND the Blackhearts, and to all nominees!

One site reported a couple of weeks ago that Joan Jett would win a Humanitarian award at PETA’s 30th Anniversary Gala and Humanitarian Awards Show on September 25th. I shared that with you, but wasn’t sure about the accuracy of the information because I couldn’t find any other sources.
The awards show was last night, but Joan didn’t win an award. I’m OK with that though, because we all know Joan’s commitment to animals and the environment, and I’m sure she will be up for more awards in the future.
I don’t know if Joan was ever up for an award this year or not, because I’m not sure if PETA whittled the winners down from a list of nominees, or if they just picked the winners and notified them ahead of time.
PETA has posted the full list of honorees on their site HERE. Congratulations to all the winners.
Joan Jett with her namesake, Joan Jett the pig, at Farm Sanctuary. LOVE. 🙂
On September 25, PETA’s 30th Anniversary Gala & Humanitarian Awards will be held in Hollywood. The star-studded event, which will award celebrities for their work in animal rights activism, will be hosted by Alec Baldwin.
AfterElton.com is reporting that Joan Jett will be one of the honorees, along with Tim Gunn, Kellan Lutz, and Charo, among others. I haven’t found any other source that mentions her explicitly, but I hope it’s true! PETA’s official site for the gala does not list the honorees. If you hear any more about these awards before I do, let us know!
Whether or not Joan is honored on September 25th, she is unlikely to attend the event herself because The Blackhearts are scheduled to perform at the Virgin Mobile FreeFest at the Merriweather Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland that same night.
Joan has supported PETA for years and is always popping up on their “sexiest vegetarian” lists. Back in May, Joan stood in New York’s Union Square and passed out vegetarian starter kits to passers-by. She also filmed a vegetarian testimonial:
